Although this is a fairly quick book (about 130 pages), it provides a lot of useful material. I recommend this to anyone associated with teaching reading to children., Quick response. Book was exactly as advertised., I use this book for my children in a homeschool environment. Initially when i first read this book, many of the concepts resonated true (i. e. that children imagine at the meanings of words in books and often "miss the mark"). The book explains how to pull out words from the books that children are reading, and to use those words as a basis for creating vocabulary worksheets. It gives alternate ways for finding vocabulary words as well. The tips in this book are incredibly specific, with several examples. It will not do the work for you - you still have to come up with your own words and worksheets. However, the examples are detailed and clear, and I found the process of creating vocabulary worksheets to be simple. The initial couple of times that I created worksheets, I had the publication open as I created questions, to make sure that I was not missing any important points. After that, it was a breeze. Our oldest is an sophisticated 3rd grade, and I found the recomemndations useful for her age mount, but I fully expect to make use of this for many years to come, as the tips cross age boundaries well., Great ideas on games you can play and other ways to reinforce vocabulary but honestly, coming up with games each week for different vocab is actually much work. The ideas are great, though, so now I'm looking for a book that already has a number of games and activities made for age appropriate vocab words., I will be recommending this book to all of the ELA instructors within my school. I am the Literacy Coach and I really believe instructors on know a " part" of the story in conditions of vocabulary development., In my many years of teaching, Beck is simply the best when it comes to educating vocabulary. Many lesson plan ideas and specific titles of modeling text make it easy to start using with little preparation time., Not only a ' good ideas for teachers' book, but a share to scholarly thinking on the acquisition of vocabulary which has influenced recent research into the ' shallow but broad' or ' deep and specific' modes of teaching. As a Speech Pathologist, I often find myself suggesting to instructors that they read this publication. I know that if they read it, they will enjoy it. It reads as an acceptable manual somewhat than an academic feuille., Arrived promptly. Great publication for k-5 teachers.
