The particular book arrived in great condition. It is a great book and it delves into an important question. " Do we have free will? " Particularly, it addresses whether we can choose to follow God. Luther's position is that we can't and that we are in bondage to bad thing and the devil, except if or until God intervenes and sets us free from that bondage to Satan. It is God's prerogative and His choice - it is not even something that people can choose. The book addresses and refutes another book written to ascribe " free will" to human beings. Luther says, " Simply no, we, our wills, are usually in bondage. ", I love Martin Luther. I love his sense of humor, his exhaustive, and the point, explanations. How he untangles the terminology of Erasmus and will go straight to the core of the issue was wonderful. My review of The Bondage of the Will is actually inadequate. Presently there are much better reviews. It is, just for me, i loved his words, his explanations and his wonderful sense of humor. Together the way, I figured out a lot. Thank you, Martin., I have never come across any other treaties on the subject of free-will more inspiringly informative than this one. Martin Luther had cleared away any doubt as to the fact that man has nothing to do with his salvation but for throw himself in the arms of elegance. It truly is clear that Luther failed to have all the light as to the destiny of man, however, he got it right that there is no such thing as free-will when it comes to man's salvation and final destiny. This is a book everyone who has question about freedom of the will needs to read.
C. Hugh Sharpe., Not easy to read. I got the sensation that for reading Lutero you must have a higher IQ, not easy to follow his path while coming to a summary, but the effort brings you a lot valuable. Good for brick fans, Deep discussions and writing against Erasmus and the theory that men, by free will, can accept or reject Christ. It is man's decision not God's. WRONG! Man's supposedly free will can easily choose what sin they would like to engage in. For any man to be saved, Our god must intervene since man, dead in sin, are not able to and may not submit to God who must free man from the bondage of his own will. John Kilpatrick., Broken down into three sections. Every section deals with Free of charge Will from a different perspective. Several "key" Bible verses passages and turning Erasmus' Diatribe against him, Luther helps it be clear that without the grace of Our god man's "Free Will" can do nothing Godward., Theologian J. I. Packer claims The Bondage of the Will is the "greatest piece of writing that came from Luther's pencil. " Its status as one of the classic works of the Reformation is firmly founded.

In the book Luther is addressing Erasmus, who has advocated a view of salvation which upholds the necessity of man's free will. For the first 3/4 of the book, Luther is systematically responding to Erasmus' arguments for free will. Luther's overview of Erasmus' writing is scathing although he acknowledges Erasmus massive intellect and great talent, he has no use for his arguments. Many modern readers will be put off by the tone of Luther's language, but those who read Christian works from days gone by will realize that many lights of Cathedral History wrote with great passion about the concerns of their day. When one reads early church fathers such as Tertullian the same passionate argumentation comes forth. Indeed, when one reads the Bible strong language is frequently used in opposition to injustice and false doctrine. We need only think of the Old Testament prophets, or the words of Christ ("brood of vipers", "blind guides", "whitewashed tombs"), or maybe the words of Paul (calling false teachers dogs, calling his opponents to emasculate themselves) to realize that fiery language often comes from one that is dedicated to truth. Luther is determined to earnestly deal for the faith and so he attempts to decimate Erasmus' arguments.

So the book is largely concenred with Luther's interactions with Erasmus' arguments in favor of free will. In the final portion of the book Luther lays out "the Bible doctrine", his own argument from Bible verses against free will. Luther's writing shines in this section as he points to his belief that human beings are saved entirely by the grace of Our god and by no free will or other work of their own.

It seems that one of the important thing differences between Luther and Erasmus is that Erasmus was more concerned about peacefulness and unity than fact while Luther believed that true unity was impossible besides a common commitment to truth. Luther repeatedly appeals to the text of Scripture, which he relation as the Word of God, while chiding Erasmus for his lack of consideration to the Scriptures.

It is a challenging read for most modern readers. We are unaccustomed to careful argumentation based on text messages of Scripture. We are unaccustomed (except perhaps in cyberspace) to thoroughly scathing language in our public discourse. Despite these challenges, I still recommend The particular Bondage of the Will, for its content continues to be relevant today for those seeking to understand what the Bible teaches about how precisely people are saved., gained much using this book. it is not a leisure-read.
