Born and raised in New Orleans before studying at Princeton and finally trading bonds for Salomon Friends, Lewis is a perfect candidate to tell this story because of his affection for the people of the American Southern. Although he goes into detail about the serious socioeconomic problems that divide up Memphis, and touches on the shady dealings of college football recruiters, this individual shows us that the people associated with Briarcrest Christian School are huge-hearted people who love Lord and football and cathedral, who treat their peers with respect and empathy. The Southern culture is completely different from the California bubble I've produced up in, yet I can't help but enjoy the Tuohy family, the athletic coaches, teachers, tutors, the principal, the interpersonal workers, and everyone otherwise in the neighborhood who not only gave Michael a lower leg up but went the extra mile for community in general, without any evident personal gain.
Another amazing thing about this guide, at least for me, was how cool it was when Bill Walsh and Bill Parcells and Computer chip Saban and Ed Orgeron made 'cameos' in the story, because these are people I would read about in good news or see making conventional announcements at press conferences but never knew. So when Lewis writes about Saban's sharp suits and impeccable good manners, Orgeron's barely intelligible drawl and nonstop enthusiasm, about a frustrated and disappointed Bill Walsh who didn't want to even look into the eyes of his players on the flight home from a playoff damage, I was starry-eyed. This business are celebrities to me, whom I admire for their passion and dedication to their craft.
Likewise, the occasional investment bank analogy was amusingly out there of left field. As well as the book had a countless amount of hilarious moments. These guys and gals may be serious business on the field and the classroom, but they really know how to crack a joke or break the tension.
I watched the movie after reading the book and I was surprised at how precise the filmmakers were at capturing the spirit of the people involved. For any casual movie fan, the film is enough, but if you like both the movie and sports I cannot recommend this book enough., If most likely a fan of high school, college, or NATIONAL FOOTBALL LEAGUE football, this guide is a great read. If most likely interested in discussions of school economics or discourses on race, this guide is a great read. Or if you just want to read a book that will assist you laugh, challenge you, and sometimes make you questions of the motives of the protagonists, this book is a great read.
The only reluctance I have about the book is that I do believe it purports to be about Michael Oher, the high school and college phenom left tackle. In a lot of ways it is, but only to the extent that Lewis wanted to tell Oher's story. On the other hand, yet , what Lewis is actually exploring in this book is why and how a rich, white few (Sean and Leigh Ann Tuoy) from one of the most segregated towns in America (Memphis) would become invested in young black kid who is ironically simultaneously almost impossible to notice and impossible to ignore.
In some ways, I do believe Lewis is interested in the Tuoys' investment in Michael as a person as contrasted against the system's (Briarcrest Higher School Athletics Dept, Ole Miss University, and every other major college sports program in the country, and the NFL). Everybody seems to want something from him, and that thing is immediately apparent and almost assured. However the Tuoy's were invested in him or her long before they recognized just how good a player he was. In this sense, his incredible success seems to make their investment both charming and sincere.
Tough to admit (and Lewis doesn't address this in any way, really) that I wouldn't have been interested in reading about the Tuoy's charity or Oher's fortune had it does not been for his incredible physical presents. Maybe which is real lesson of the book.
