I was intrigued to read a free account written from a female perspective and I must say that her account exceeded my expectations...
It reads like a coming of age story, written with a surprising innocence and naïveté by the recent school graduate who sets out not merely for an adventure, but to " find herself".
If you appreciate a story about linking with nature and and or self discovery this book will have you hooked from the first chapter!
It can amazing what she had to overcome to complete the journey.
Oh, and in 2011 she hiked the whole trek a second time in just 46 days!
That's almost 50 mls a day folks!
(Unbelievably, another girl bested that record 4 years later! )
I look forward to learning much more of Mrs Pharr's adventures in the future!, If I ever before desired to hike the trek which I can’t because of an injury and my age added together, I would just check out this publication. I felt like Odyssa invited me along to see her. In my young camping days in the North Georgia mountains, I was able to walk parts of the trail always thinking, “This is so peaceful and beautiful. ” I also walked some at Bear Mountain while working at a Girl Scout camp in that area. I could still picture stopping and sitting on a rock looking down. Thankful for the experience and grateful for being allowed to see Odyssa’s trip in more detail., A great publication about a single and fit woman hiking the AT alone. Introspective and surprisingly well-written. As someone who is very knowledgeable about the mountains of New England, but totally unaware of the rest of the Appalachians, I would have liked a little more of a travelogue.
I had developed to giggle at just a little remark the author made about trekking over a few mountain range in NH named after four dead presidents. Just two of the Presidentials were named after dead presidents. Knutson had not been named after Claire. Monroe was named after a sitting president, and Jefferson, Adams, and Madison were alive when famous. Washington was not named after a president, but following a Revolutionary War general who later became president. And she did not recognize a red eft when the lady saw one. Nit picking, yes..... but also a reflection of the truth that through hikers do not have the time to thoroughly appreciate the history, geology, and ecology of the territory they hike through.
I used to be astonished that the DOC was not more helpful. I once had the same job as the person she saw at the desk, and I strongly recall speaking with a 16-year old Eric Ryback when he hiked through, carrying, believe it or not, a guitar., I have read over 12 of the books which may have already been written by thru hikers concerning the Appalachian Trail. This has been the best that I have read. It is the first the one which I possess read that was written by a girl hiker. I thought that it would be informative to get a woman's perspective on hiking the trail in case my daughter ever decided to hike it.
Initially, I was hesitant to read it due to some of the negative reviews that had been expressed concerning the woman conservative and Christian upbringing in the south and her discussion about the woman faith. Nevertheless, I was glad that I read the book; I discover that my thoughts often mirror the woman thought process. I find Jennifer a kindred wandering spirit and giver the woman high marks for the woman quality writing.
When I in the beginning started reading the book We would have explained that there was no way that Jennifer would complete the trip due to her lack of readiness and her inexperience in hiking and camping. But as she stuck with the hike I really could see her transform from a scared and naïve 21 12 months old girl into a confident adult. I feel glad that she completed well.
I am pleased that Mouch and Nightwalker were there to encourage her at the end. Someone should have treated with Moot. Dealing with a stalker like Moot would be a good reason to have carry spray., Interesting, I figured out a lot of different vocabulary related to hiking. Enjoyed the adventure. The personality types of hikers is also interesting. Impressed using their independent character. This book should be one for teen ladies, women to read credit rating of an independent pondering nature. I actually acquired hiking shoes and feel exploring locally., So I had wanted this book for awhile and had it sitting in my wish list. I finally got it for myself as a treat and it also was so worth it!
I loved the way Jennifer/Odyssa told her story. I had read "Wild" by Cheryl Strayed and was hoping it would be more like Becoming Odyssa is. It really is about the trail, and I really enjoyed the overall tone of the book. I appreciated hearing about Odyssa's faith and opinions on a variety of topics; but I never felt like the woman views were pushed on me, or that the lady was a writer with a religious/political undertone to her book.
I really felt like I was on the trail with the woman (which I loved! ). I felt too bad for her with Moot; I felt like I desired to punch him in the face because this individual was so annoying!
I would suggest this publication. Its a great read and I could hardly put it down. I actually stopped partway through because I desired to move the book a little longer because I used to be enjoying it so much., This is about my 20th publication about thru--hiking I have review the past several years as I get ready for my own AT thru-hike starting next March. This book reminds me that the trip will be hard, but it will also be worthwhile. The author was obviously a lttle bit naive when she decide, but the trail obviously matured the woman. Overall this was a really enjoyable read., I liked this book. Odyssa's tale is well written and from the center. Lately, I have been busy and so i may finish some of the books that I start, but this one was finished quickly and I enjoyed every page. I felt like I was travelling on the AT with Odyssa, For me, the postscript was a surprise. Highly recommended for anyone who enjoys reading about outside adventure and overcoming hurdles and challenges.
