We highly recommend this book, but I'm submitting a new three-star review based on the book's very weak and undisciplined finish. I thought the first two-thirds associated with the book provided a new well-documented and well-thought-out presentation of America's regional differences and the history behind those differences. It was genuinely enlightening, even for the historian like myself. When creating the last third, however , the author obviously dropped his objective discipline. Whereas the very first two-thirds were well-reasoned and well-supported, the final third devolved into stereotypes and generalities, and contained more than a couple of downright errors, particularly with regards to the modern Deep South and Greater Appalachia. We am an unapologetic Remaining Coaster with clear leanings toward activist Yankeeism, but even I was able to see Mr. Woodard's obvious bias in the final third of the book. We found myself cringing more than a few periods at the outright errors contained in his presentation of the modern South. I could list at minimum a half-dozen factual problems in his presentation with regards to the practice and influence of Evangelical Christianity inside the Bible Belt, for instance, but would rather not bog down this evaluation with nit-picking. It might be great if Mr. Woodard could write a new revised edition where he or she would exercise the same historical discipline within the last third of the book he did for the 1st two-thirds. Such a presentation would truly be deserving of five stars. We still feel that this book is very much worth reading, but readers ought to approach the final third together with a skeptical eye., Merlu Woodard has written the story of North America that should be taught in school in place of the simplified, sanitized, almost fictional versions created, like just about all national histories, for the purpose of welding barbaridad peoples into a individual nation by convincing all of them they all share a common history. Like other reviewers here I had study Joel Garreau's "Nine Nations" inside the 1980s and more recently Kevin Phillips' "The Cousins Wars" and Dante Chinni's "Patchwork Nation". These people were full of interesting information, but Nine Nations and Patchwork Nation didn't address the origins or determination of the notable local differences among North Americans. I do believe Woodard's main thesis is the fact that these regional civilizations left their marks so deeply that we are no longer consciously aware about them, and should be. My experience living and employed in several of these kinds of "nations" indicates that this local differences do persist, although national media and marketing have masked them.

Reading through "American Nations" I sensed the pieces falling directly into place. I am unsure on the question associated with precisely how valid the thesis of 11 rival nations is usually as political science, but it makes for a fine explication of our background.
